Caravaggio ( 1571-1610 ) dipinse due versioni della testa di medusa . Il primo a 1596 e l'altro presumibilmente in 1597/8 . la prima versione conosciuta anche come murtula , a causa del poeta che ne scrisse ( 48x55 centimetri ) è firmato michel af , ( michel angelo fecit ) ed è stato trovato sul painter’s studio solo dopo la sua morte . Oggi appartiene a una collezione privata mentre la seconda versione , leggermente più grande ( 60 x 55 centimetri ) non è firmato ed è nella galleria degli uffizi , a firenze .
